About Flat Stanley

The Flat Stanley Project (www.flatstanley.com) was created by Dale Hubert, a teacher from London, Ontario, Canada who wanted to provide students with a meaningful reason to write. Students make paper figures, called "Flat Stanley" and begin a journal about his adventures for a few days. Then Flat Stanley and the journal are sent to another school, where students there treat Flat Stanley as a guest and add to or complete the journal. Flat Stanley and the journal are then returned to the original sender.

First Lady Ginger Beebe received her first Flat Stanley from an elementary student from Texas who wanted to learn more about Arkansas. Mrs. Beebe took Flat Stanley to various locations and compiled a book of photographs depicting Flat Stanley in various locations in Arkansas. Then she sent the photos and completed journal back to the student.

“It was lot of fun, and I realized how Flat Stanley can help tell Arkansas’s story,” Ginger Beebe said. “Flat Stanley went all over our State with (Governor) Mike (Beebe) and me, and I decided to ask students from the Clinton School of Public Service to help Flat Stanley travel all over the world. I was fascinated when I read about all of the places that the Clinton School students travel.”

Clinton School students are happy to participate.

"This is a terrific idea," said Maricella Garcia, a Clinton School student traveling to Nicaragua for her international project. "We are honored to be part of bringing the world to the Arkansas classrooms."
