January 21 | Kenya, Africa: Maasai Mara
Today, I visited Kenya’s most famous wilderness area and game reserve, Maasai Mara. It is 200 miles of open plains, woodlands, and rivers full of life. In the plains I saw herds of zebra, giraffe, gazelle, and topi, and I saw many varieties of birds and monkeys that inhabited the Acacia forests. In the swampland, I saw elephants and buffalo wallowing in the Musiara Swamp, and I found the Mara and Talek rivers filled with hippos and dangerous crocodiles. Before leaving the Mara, I shared a meal with some of the local Maasai people. These people live in harmony with the wildlife and actually consider it important to protect the land and animals that coexist with them in the Mara.
