February 5 | Rwanda, Africa: Millennium Village
Mayange is part of the Bugesera District and home to 5,000 people who returned after the war. Including the number of people in the surrounding villages, the total number of people who live in Mayange is close to 50,000. I spent the day there, trying to understand what this Millennium Village is doing. It isn’t hard to see why this United Nations project is needed. There are very few public shops, community areas, or organized villages outside Mayange. People in this nation are very poor and starved; disease is a constant threat. In addition to HIV/AIDS, malaria is a constant worry due to a lack of an adequate and clean water supply. I am going to work here for a couple of days.
