March 23 | South Africa Sight-seeing
Nelson Mandela spent many years living in Soweto, just outside Johannesburg. His Soweto home is a major tourist attraction, and I visited it today to learn more about the man and what he accomplished for South Africa. Another great man from Soweto, Desmond Tutu, is a cleric and activist who rose to worldwide fame during the 1980s, through his opposition to apartheid. From my tour of this area, it was obvious to me that many people in South Africa are poor; half of the people of South Africa live in poverty. I also traveled to Kliptown to see Freedom Square. Here, I found a historical monument honoring those who struggled for freedom. This monument was erected at the place where the Congress of the People signed the freedom charter in 1955.
