August 26 | New York: Clinton Climate InitiativeWeek 2 in the “Big Apple” … I always wanted to say that! Today, I got to begin working with a new project, the
Clinton Climate Initiative. The Clinton Climate Initiative works with leaders of large cities around the world to reduce consumption of energy and preserve the environment. Tony told me that the Initiative tries to slow down the threat of global warming. I remember from science class that global warming occurs when too many gases from automobiles rise up and heat the earth’s surface, causing the earth to act as a “greenhouse.” Tony said that cities like New York are prone to lots of pollution because so many people live there. Tony also said that New York has a lot to lose if the earth gets too hot. The hotter the earth gets, the more the polar ice caps will begin to thaw. If this happens over an extended period of time, the sea level will begin to rise and cities like New York, which are located on the edge of the ocean, will become at risk for permanent flooding. In Arkansas, we do not have to worry about the sea rising, but we do know about flooding … and it’s not fun!
