September 6 | Nicaragua: Canopy Tour
This area is filled with grand tropical rainforests, and I got to go on a “canopy tour.” The canopy is the area at the top of the trees where lots of wildlife live. The local guide told me that I would see so many monkeys up high in the trees. I’ve only seen them in a zoo. And he was right – they chattered so loudly! Later in the afternoon, I paid a visit to the Old Cathedral on the east side of Republic Square. It was partially destroyed in 1972 by an earthquake. It now serves as a museum, and I learned much of Nicaragua’s history there. As we walked through the Cathedral, my local guide helped me with the Spanish language spoken there. The Old Cathedral is a part of their religious heritage because the majority of people in Nicaragua are Roman Catholic.
