October 13 | New Zealand: Whangarei
Whangarei has a population of 44,000 and is a natural harbor town. From where I’m standing, I can see the five peaks of Mount Mania. This settlement dates back to 1839, when Europeans arrived, but disputes with local Maori caused many settlers to move to Auckland. For over 200 years, raising livestock (sheep and cattle) has been the primary economic activity for New Zealanders. Any land used in cultivation is often for animal fodder. Some areas also grow fruits and vegetables. Dairy products, wool, and meat are very important exports.
