November 13 | Arrive in Kosovo, Serbia
Today I have landed in Pristina. Pristina is the capital and the largest city of Kosovo. Kosovo is a region in southern Serbia that has been under the United Nations administration since 1999 because of conflict and civil unrest in this area. The region is landlocked and the terrain is quite rugged. The Sharr Mountains, located in the south, are one of the region’s most popular attractions. Many ethnicities inhabit this region, including Albanians, Serbs, Turks, Bosniaks, Roma, and other ethnic groups.
While I am in Kosovo, I am going to meet my keypal, Petar, for the first time. We have e-mailed each other for over a year and have exchanged information about each other’s cultures. Petar has also shared some exciting projects that several schools in the area have been working on to build a cooperative spirit between schools. Children of different ethnicities attend different schools. These ethnic groups do not always get along with each other. These projects and activities that Petar’s school is participating in is working to change people’s attitudes towards each other and to build a community where every one is respected and where all ethnic groups can live in harmony.
