November 18 | Kosovo, Serbia: Kosovo Schools
Petar and I have visited several different schools this week in the Kosovo region. There is a lot of poverty and civil unrest in the area, but children in these schools are working to make a difference. Schools from all different ethnic groups have been working together to discuss common needs and problems and to identify solutions. Petar and his classmates have been participating in art competitions and children’s theatre performances with other schools in the region. The first Children’s Art Competition was held in 2005, and children spent a day painting pictures on the theme “Friends Across Borders.” Another activity that was fun for the students was participating in sports competitions, including Football without Borders. (In the United States, we call it soccer.) The children learned that everyone has creative talents to share with other cultures and that they enjoy the same activities.
