Africa: Ghana
Ghana, Africa
Ghana is a county in West Africa.  It lies very close to the Equator, so it has a tropical, hot climate.  Most people in Ghana are farmers.  They raise crops such as yams, sweet potatoes, cocoa, corn, and rice.  Ghana also makes money by trading, or sending its cocoa, diamonds, gold, and the element manganese* to other countries.

Accra is the capitol and economic center of Ghana.  It is one of the richest cities in Africa, and it has a university, an international airport, and a national museum of history.  In the native Ghanaian language, Nkran, Accra means “ants.”  The city was named for the plentiful anthills found on the surrounding plains.

The Sovereign Global Mission is an effort to help poor people, especially children, living in Ghana.  It was founded in 1992 by Reverend Eric Kwasi Annan because of the helpless children forced to live on the streets of Accra.  Education and medicine are too expensive for a lot of the people living in Ghana, and the Sovereign Global Mission tries to raise funds to provide these people with the things they need.
