Argentina: Buenos Aires
Argentina is the second largest country in South America and the eighth largest country in the world. It is bordered by Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay, and Chile. The Andes mountain range runs through western Argentina, and to the south and east, lies the Atlantic Ocean. Historians believe that humans have lived in Argentina since 11,000 B.C. The Incans founded their civilization there around 1480. About one hundred years later, Spain founded a permanent colony in Buenos Aires. Argentina declared independence from Spain in 1816.
Argentina is rich in diversity and culture. It is home to one of the most famous, well-respected authors of today, Jorge Luis Borges. Many critically acclaimed films are produced in Argentina as well. Tango is Argentina’s national musical symbol.
Buenos Aires, which means fair winds, is the capital and largest city in Argentina and its Colon Theater is one of the world’s most famous opera houses.
