Serbia landscape

The Republic of Serbia is a landlocked country in Central and Southeastern Europe covering the southern part of the Pannonian Plain and the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. Serbia, largely mountainous, borders Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia, and Herzegovina. Its capital is Belgrade.

The Serbian state, as we know it today, was created in 1170 A.D. In modern times, Serbia was one of six republics making up the country of Yugoslavia, which dissolved during the 1990's. In 2003, Serbia and Montenegro were the remaining two republics of the "rump" of Yugoslavia, forming a loose federation. In 2006, Montenegro split from Serbia.
